Are You An Australian With A Disability? Here’s How NDIS Can Help You!

If you are one of the 5 million Australians with a disability you may be aware of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and what it can do to help you live a fuller life. The NDIS supports and services delivered to participants help people with disability enjoy the same things in life as other people, such as a place to live, employment, hobbies and interests, and a community of friends and family.

There are private health care agencies affiliated with the program like Carewell Healthcare Pty Ltd that can help you get enrolled and will assist and support you with the ongoing management of your personal program.

The following are some of the supports that you may be eligible to receive:

  • Transportation
  • Daily life assistance like dressing and hygiene
  • Modifications to your home
  • Participation in social and community life
  • Replenishing consumables like food and clothing
  • Assistive technologies to aid you with your disability
  • Support coordination
  • Employment, aiding you in securing and keeping a job,
  • Making living arrangements
  • Maintaining and improving your general health and wellbeing
  • Learning and education opportunities
  • Making positive life choices

It’s also important to be aware that there are some things that NDIS will not support, like the following:

  • If it is the same as different supports delivered under other NDIS funding
  • If it is something not related to your disability
  • If it can be more effectively or appropriately provided by a different system, for example, health or education
  • If there is a possibility that it could cause harm to you or present a risk to other people
  • If it relates to day-to-day living costs that are not considered to be covered by your support needs

The NDIS also strives to provide support for you if you suffer from a psychosocial disability, in other words, a disability that stems from a mental health condition, and if that condition has a day-to-day impact on your overall well-being. The NDIS will fund supports that function to increase your independence, promote your feeling of inclusion, and help foster your social and economic participation in your community.

Only reasonable and necessary factors will be supported by NDIS, when deciding if your situation is eligible the NDIS will take the following into account:

  • Is the requested support directly related to or stemming from your psychosocial disability?
  • Is requested day-to-day living cost connected to the needs of psychosocial disability support?
  • Is the requested support safe and legal?
  • Is the requested support already available from your current caregivers, family, mainstream services, social networks or communities?
  • Does the requested support offer real value for the money it requires?
  • Is the requested support likely to work and be of benefit to you?

NDIS supports and services are designed to help you live your best life without your disability stopping you from achieving your personal goals! Help is available!
